New 'kidney belts' tested
A BATTERY-OPERATED artificial "kidney belt" that can be worn by patients is being tested by researchers.
Scientists hope the 10lb device will allow patients with failed kidneys to free themselves from dialysis machines.
The new Wearable Artificial Kidney provides dialysis round-the-clock while the patient is able to walk, work or sleep.
"We believe the Wearable Artificial Kidney will not only reduce the mortality and misery of dialysis patients, but will also result in significant reduction in the cost of providing viable health care," said Dr Victor Gura, who heads the US team at the University of California in Los Angeles.
The kidney belt is described in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
