New director takes on top NHS research role

A KEY research appointment has been made by the local health board.

Professor David Newby, an eminent consultant in cardiology, will take on the role of director of research and development at NHS Lothian. He replaces Prof Heather Cubie, who recently retired.

Medical director Dr Charles Swainson said the appointment reaffirmed NHS Lothian's commitment to research.

"Prof Cubie made a tremendous contribution to medical research and set the bar high," he said.

"In Prof David Newby we have appointed someone with proven research credentials and are sure he will continue to ensure medical research has a high priority."

Mr Newby added: "I look forward to working with patients, clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals in developing clinical research excellence in Lothian and across Scotland."
