Naked Rambler's girlfriend fined for nude walk

THE girlfriend of the Naked Rambler has been fined £100 for walking naked along a Lothian street six months ago.

Hairdresser Melanie Roberts, 34, was stopped during the nationwide trek on Main Street, Roslin, on September 1 last year.

Roberts, from Westcliff Studios, Bournemouth, earlier pleaded guilty to committing a breach of the peace by publicly exposing herself. When she appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court the following day, Sheriff Derrick McIntyre was told the couple had been spotted by a postman walking along the A701 Edinburgh-Penicuik road.

Gough and Roberts, wearing only socks and hiking boots, were on their way from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Sheriff McIntyre deferred sentence on Roberts and released her on bail until yesterday for her to be of good behaviour.

Fiscal, Malcolm Stewart, confirmed that Roberts had obeyed the terms of the bail order. Her defence agent, Roy Harley, said there had been no repetition of the behaviour. He added that Roberts was now unemployed. Sheriff McIntyre allowed Roberts to pay the fine at 5 a week.
