Music review: Scottish Chamber Orchestra

SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA *****

QUEEN'S HALL, EDINBURGH

MUSIC by Beethoven, Mozart and Schumann may be overly familiar landmarks on the classical repertoire map, but they were reinvigorated in this turbocharged performance by the SCO, powered by the energetic French conductor Louis Langre.

Beethoven wrote just one opera, but clearly sweated over the overture, writing four before he was happy. Leonore No 2 is full of dramatic moments, thrillingly evoked by the orchestra.

Schumann's Symphony No 4 was played brilliantly, the SCO producing a rich and powerful sound of almost symphonic proportions.

Separating these two magnificent pieces was Mozart's charming, but seldom played, Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola K364.
