Murphy speaks of his hope in bringing Pope to Scotland
THE Scottish Secretary spoke yesterday of his hopes that the Pope will visit Scotland next year. Jim Murphy will travel to Rome for talks this week with Vatican officials about a possible visit to the UK next year by Pope Benedict.
Mr Murphy is expected to meet the Pope during his General Audience on Wednesday.
The Pope is expected to visit the UK in 2010, although no arrangements have been announced.
Mr Murphy said: "It would be a fantastic occasion if the Pope were to visit Britain. The Prime Minister wants us to work closely with the Vatican. It is too early to say if the Pope will be coming to Scotland next year, but it certainly won't be for a lack of trying on my part."
