MSPs to debate problem of paying for bridge
A FULL debate on funding the new Forth Road Bridge is to be staged in the Scottish Parliament next week as the row over how to pay for the £2 billion project escalates.
Labour accused the SNP of "doing real damage" to the Scottish economy by not having a mechanism in place to finance the scheme. UK Treasury Minister Yvette Cooper has ruled out the Scottish Government's idea of bringing forward capital allocations from future years up to 2031.
Labour finance spokesman Andy Kerr said: "The new Forth Bridge is Scotland's biggest construction project in a generation and the SNP are making a mess of it." Meanwhile the Tories said they had written to the SNP proposing talks on the funding issue – a suggestion turned down by ministers.
The Scottish Government said it was "delighted" to debate its "robust and common sense proposals" to finance the new bridge.
