MSPs sign up for biomass plants probe

THERE have been calls for the Scottish Government to carry out a full investigation into the concerns surrounding four controversial biomass plants.

Falkirk East MSP Cathy Peattie has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament amid worries over the "local impact" of the plants, such as those earmarked for Grangemouth and Leith.

Forth Energy also wants to build biomass plants at Rosyth and Dundee, transporting woodchip from North America or Scandinavia to be burned to produce energy. However, there are concerns about the health impacts, with both NHS Lothian and NHS Tayside calling for further studies.

Ms Peattie's motion said the plants "should not proceed" until a full investigation had been carried out. Forth Energy says all emissions will be within acceptable limits.

A decision is expected on the plants later this year.
