MSPs listen to calls for routine hearing screenings for over-55s

ANYONE over 55 should be routinely screened for hearing problems, a leading charity has said.

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People has called on the Scottish Government to introduce the measures after a poll found most MSPs would be in favour of the move.

The calls have been made as part of the Edinburgh-based RNID's Hearing Matters campaign. Director Delia Henry said: "We are delighted that across all parties MSPs are supporting our call for a NHS hearing screening programme for over 55s.

"By the time we reach 60, one in every two of us have difficulty hearing but, unfortunately, it takes 15 years on average for people to address their hearing loss.

"Not only would screening be a springboard for people to return to leading fulfilling and active lives, but it makes financial sense for the NHS to treat a patient's hearing loss at an early stage before it deteriorates and becomes more costly to operate."
