MSP to call for 'radical shift' in EU fishing industry policy

THE Scottish fisheries secretary will set out the case for a "radical shift" in EU policy today to satisfy the needs of the industry.

Richard Lochhead is meeting commissioner Maria Damanaki in Brussels where he will also highlight the country's conservation credentials and his aim to protect historic fishing rights.

The SNP minister wants major reform of the Common Fisheries Policy which governs EU states.

He said: "Commissioner Damanaki has previously expressed her determination to work together to safeguard the future of local fisheries. This won't happen without radical changes in fisheries policy.

"I am now looking forward to meeting the commissioner in person to seek clarification on her views and outline the role Scotland can play."

Mr Lochhead said "real leadership" has been shown in fisheries conservation, particularly in trying to address an EU policy which forces skippers to dump much of their catch, known as discards.

He added: "It is in the interests of the whole of Scotland that we continue to seek a radical change in European fisheries policy that delivers a sustainable future."
