MSP in Malawi mercy trip to head off deportation

AN MSP plans to visit Malawi to gather evidence in the hope of preventing the deportation of mother and daughter Florence and Precious Mhango.

The pair have been served deportation papers after their asylum application was rejected.

Supporters are raising money for an appeal, and First Minister Alex Salmond and culture secretary Fiona Hyslop have written to immigration minister Damian Green asking that he hold an independent review. However, time appears to be running out for the 32-year-old and her daughter, ten, who moved to Glasgow after fleeing an allegedly abusive relationship.

Anne McLaughlin, SNP MSP for Glasgow, said: "There is no doubt in my mind that it is not safe for Precious to go to Malawi and so I have decided, if there is no other way of proving that, I will get on a flight to Malawi and I will meet with everyone involved and get the evidence myself."
