MSP calls for zero tolerance on NHS attacks
A ZERO-TOLERANCE approach should be adopted if violence against hospital staff is to cease, a Lothians MSP has said.
The Evening News revealed that eight NHS workers a day in the area suffer some kind of attack, although many of these occur in mental health hospitals.
Now Conservative Gavin Brown has said that the only way to reduce those numbers is to take a harder line on perpetrators. He also urged the Scottish Government to do more to protect nurses and other at-risk health workers.
He said: "I don't think you can just put the figures down to more nurses reporting attacks, it is clear that people are getting more aggressive towards emergency staff and this is completely unacceptable. What is required is a zero tolerance approach."
Figures revealed that St John's Hospital was the worst for attacks, with 265 flashpoints last year, while there were 157 at the ERI and 65 at the Western.
