MP supports circus animal campaign

Edinburgh East Labour MP Sheila Gilmore has backed calls for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.

She pledged to support the campaign by Animal Defenders International (ADI), which claims that public and political support for a ban has never been stronger.

Ms Gilmore said there were plenty successful circuses that travelled the country without animal acts.

She said: "When local authorities took the step (to ban circuses with wild animals from council land] about 20 years ago people said, 'Well, that will be the end of circuses in the city'. We have seen some superb circuses every year since."

An online poll by YouGov for ADI recently found 72 per cent supported a ban with only eight per cent against. Another poll ComRes showed 71 per cent of the public backing a ban and the UK Government's own public consultation last year also found that 94.5 per cent of respondents backed a ban on wild animal acts.
