Mother reveals son's poignant last messages

THE mother of Liam Tasker, the 26-year-old army dog handler and explosives expert killed in Afghanistan in March, has revealed the messages her son sent members of his family to be opened in the event of his death.

In one of the letters, Lance Corporal Tasker wrote: "Each day is a gift and not a given right. I have tried to live life around this ethos and would love if you could all do the same."

Jane Duffy, pictured below, who has moved back to her son's birthplace of Tayport, Fife, said: "I read the letters over and over again. He showed remarkable maturity in every message he gave us."

• A Royal Marine was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan yesterday. The marine, from 42 Commando Royal Marines, was involved in a search of a compound in the Loy Mandeh Wadi area, north Helmand.

Next of kin have been informed.
