A MUM has told a court that she was raped at the age of 19 after she agreed to sleep over at an ex-soldier’s house.

The 41-year-old woman, who can’t be named for legal reasons, claimed Hugh McCardle had offered to cook her dinner when she visited his home.

She told the High Court at Livingston that McCardle later had sex with her against her wishes while she pretended to be asleep.

McCardle, 62, of Livingston, West Lothian, denies committing a series of historic offences between March 1989 and June 2000 including rape, sexual abuse and assault.

Another witness – a 61-year-old grandmother – said she walked into the bathroom in McCardle’s house on another occasion and found him on his knees beside her granddaughter, who was naked in the bath.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel Mark Moir, the woman firmly refuted his suggestions that the incident had not happened.

The trial, before Lord Turnbull, continues.
