THE mother of writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson has died, aged 86.

Mamie Baird Magnusson died at home in Blairskaith House, at Balmore-Torrance, near Glasgow, surrounded by her family on 12 April.

Mrs Magnusson was married to journalist and Mastermind presenter Magnus Magnusson, who died five years ago. They had five children – Sally, Margaret, Anna, Jon and Siggy, who died in 1973.

Mrs Magnusson was herself a journalist, but was happy in later life to be know as the wife of Magnus or the mother of Sally.

Last month, Sally Magnusson spoke of her mother’s eight-year own when she launched a dementia-friendly home design online guide, based at the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre.

Ms Magnusson said: “To watch it take over a vibrant, merry, intelligent, active, independent woman, a writer, a witty conversationalist whose great joy was words, and to watch it suck all that slowly and agonisingly out of her has been heartbreaking.”

“The journey my sisters and I have been on with our beloved mother has been emotionally shattering.”

Mrs Magnusson’s funeral will take place on 20 April at 12 pm, at Baldernock Parish Church, Balmore.
