More cash for healthy eating on the menu

EIGHT different community groups in Edinburgh have been given funding by the Scottish Government to help promote healthy eating in the Capital.

Groups include the Pilton Youth and Children's Project, which will receive 2,680 to establish a community-based cafe involving socially-excluded young people, and the Out of the Blue Trust, which is to open a new food co-operative in Leith.

The money forms part of the annual Community Food and Health grant, which goes to groups working in low-income communities from across Scotland that are involved in a wide range of healthy eating activities.

All the projects funded aim to increase healthy diets by tackling the affordability and availability of healthy foods and developing skills and confidence.

Community food and health development officer Kim Newstead said: "Many of the groups that we have awarded funding to are successful because they listen to and involve the people they hope to help."
