Moonwalk this way

THERE are easier ways to spend a cold, wet night in Edinburgh than to charge 26.2 miles through the dark wearing just a bra on top. Yet thousands of women and men have done just that – many of them twice – as part of the, now annual, MoonWalk Edinburgh.

Those who have already walked the walk are an inspiring bunch. And those thinking of taking part this year will themselves be inspired by the news, revealed here today, that 2m which has already been raised is to help build a new Maggie's Centre in Glasgow. Set next to the Beatson Oncology Centre, it will support thousands of cancer patients each year with practical, emotional and psychological help. The new centre will add to the work already being done at the other Maggie's Centre in Glasgow, plus those in Edinburgh, Inverness, Dundee and Kirkcaldy.

A seventh Scottish site is planned in Wishaw and it, like all the others, will have an innovative design. Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid have been project architects on two, and the new Glasgow centre will be designed by Rem Koolhaas. This should ensure a stunning new landmark in Glasgow's West End.

But, of course, the main Maggie's aim is to provide a vital lifeline for cancer patients, and it is this that will hopefully inspire yet more MoonWalkers on June 14 this year – and their sponsors. Scotland on Sunday is proud to be the newspaper partner of this very worthy event. Find out how you can take part in this week's Spectrum, pages 14 to 16.
