Minority OAPs 'accept abuse'
BLACK and ethnic minority elderly people are not treated well but are unlikely to do anything about it, research findings suggested today.
Their reasons include shame, dependency, fear, and lack of alternatives, said the report.
The research report, launched today by Age Concern Scotland, found 62 per cent were not treated well, either in their families or more widely.
The most common mistreatment was "lack of respect".
Some 55 per cent had directly encountered an older person experiencing abuse, and 41 per cent had tried to help them.
And 81 per cent said an older black and ethnic minority person experiencing mistreatment would do nothing about it.
David Manion, of Age Concern Scotland, said: "This research is of interest to many nations."
