Minister urges joint effort to tackle alcohol problem
A "COLLECTIVE effort" is needed to tackle Scotland's drink problem, justice secretary Kenny MacAskill said yesterday.
He stressed he was committed to working "across the drinks industry" to try to achieve that.
The Scottish Government has put forward a series of measures to crack down on alcohol abuse, which costs the country some 2.25 billion a year.
This week Mr MacAskill insisted that plans to bring in a minimum price for alcohol would not affect the Scotch whisky industry.
And yesterday he said: "Those who sell quality products at responsible prices have nothing to fear from what we propose."
The minister said the Scottish drinks industry was a "major employer and significant exporter of goods across the world".
He added: "I remain committed to working across the industry to ensure that we secure a common goal of improving our relationship with alcohol and achieving a safer and healthier Scotland."
