Minimum wage rise ‘effectively a cut’ say TUC leaders

Low-paid workers will suffer an effective cut in their pay, despite an increase today in the national minimum wage, according to union leaders.

The TUC said that with inflation running at 2.9 per cent, the 1.8 per cent rise in the statutory hourly rate would lead to a “squeeze” on the living standards of almost a million, mainly female, workers.
