Midwives to be main carers
STEPS are being taken to ensure women with straightforward pregnancies have as little medical intervention as possible.
The Scottish Government has outlined plans to make midwives the lead carers for such expectant mothers, meaning birthing remains as natural as possible for the majority and frees up doctors to focus on more complex pregnancies.
Unveiling the proposal, public health minister Shona Robison said: "Pregnancy and birth are normal and natural.
"Having a midwife as the main carer is the best way to ensure that a woman is in control of her own pregnancy and care options."
