MBE for Southside's veteran campaigner
A VETERAN campaigner in Edinburgh’s Southside has been awarded an MBE for services to young people and the community.
The Evening News incorrectly reported on Saturday that an MBE had been awarded to Margaret Wilson, of Inverkeithing, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
The award had in fact been conferred on Maggie Wilson, from East Crosscauseway, in Edinburgh, who has spent almost 30 years fighting to bring a sports centre to the area.
Her determination finally paid off when a complex eventually opened earlier this year.
The 67-year-old has also been a leading figure in a number of community organisations, including the Southside Association.
The Capital veteran campaigner said that she had been delighted to discover that she had been made a Member of the British Empire.
"The sports centre was definitely the one major achievement for me, as it took 28 years to finally get it.
"I was obviously really very pleased to hear about the MBE, which is a lovely reward for all the hard work," she said.
