Margo MacDonald hits out over snub for migrant centre
LOTHIANS MSP Margo MacDonald hit back at Europe Minister Linda Fabiani after she rejected plans for a welcome centre to help migrants from Eastern Europe.
In January, Ms MacDonald called for a facility at Edinburgh Airport to identify migrants' qualifications, their ability to speak English and to provide advice on employment, training courses and other services.
Last month she met the Polish ambassador to Britain, Barbara Tuge-Erecinska, to discuss her idea. But Ms Fabiani has rejected the plans, saying it was not the Scottish Government's role to provide such a service.
She said: "This is something local authorities are much better placed to provide."
Ms MacDonald responded: "She has still missed the basic point. A welcome centre is a better way of identifying how many migrants we have."
