Marathon relay runner dies in ERI
A RUNNER has died after collapsing during the Edinburgh marathon.
The man, part of a four-person relay team, was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but later died. Some runners struggled in temperatures of up to 23C.
A spokeswoman for the marathon said: "During the Edinburgh Marathon team relay, a 52-year-old male runner from Edinburgh collapsed during the first section of the relay race.
"He was attended to immediately at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service before being conveyed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. It was subsequently confirmed that he had died.
There appears to be no suspicious circumstances, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."
Thousands of runners took part in the relay, which sees the course split into four sections measuring 8.1 miles, 5.4 miles, 8 miles and 4.7 miles.
The runner who died was competing in the first stretch of the race, between Regent Road and Fisherrow Links in Musselburgh.
