A MAN has been crushed to death after becoming ensnared in machinery while unloading materials at Musselburgh Racecourse.

The fatality occurred at 9am this morning and involved a contractor who supplies materials to the East Lothian attraction.

It is understood the man had been unloading gravel from a truck when he became trapped in a machine used to lift materials to the ground.

He was discovered by ground staff who went to his aid and called the emergency services, but the man later died of his injuries

Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said: “This appears to be a tragic accident and our sincere condolences go to the family of the man concerned.

“We will give our full support to the emergency services and Health and Safety Executive in any subsequent investigation in to the incident.”
