Alison Watson, customer experience director at Virgin Trains East Coast, which is 90 per cent owned by Perth-based Stagecoach and 10 per cent by Virgin Group, said: “Since the start of our new business earlier this year, we have been working to create a uniform that looks professional, smart and also reflects the Virgin brand.”

The new uniform, featuring micro checked shirts and blouses, bright red ties and scarves, plus waistcoats and jumpers, is part of the rebranding of the trains since the company began operating services on the East Coast Main Line last March.

Virgin Trains has also rolled out more than 1,700 smartphones for its customer-facing staff “to improve communications between staff and customers”. Watson said “Staff are our greatest asset”, and it “is important that they both look and feel good”.
