Lynne McCrossan: There's no place quite like home in the style stakes
NOTHING highlights the styles of Auld Reekie better than when you turn your back on the city.
Waving goodbye as your train chugs out of Waverley, excitement sets in at the thought of exploring a new stomping ground. Especially when that happens to be Shopping Mecca, or Manchester as it's better known.
That's where I spent last weekend, treated to a football match and a spot of vintage shopping, in that order.
It felt like an edgier home from home. You find Harvey Nichols nestled in the extensive high street, there is the majestic Midland Hotel sitting across from the original Central Station (much like our Balmoral) and there's even a fully functional tram system. Well, two out of three ain't bad!
But it's the fashion choices of the city that really emphasise the stark differences between Edinburgh and the place three-and-a-half hours down the railway line.
I had never noticed how preppy-chic our city was until I came face-to-face with Manchester's glam rock roots.
We may have similar high street shops in many of our big cities up and down the country, but the Edinburgh sense of style couldn't be more signature to this one place. While it's nice to visit our stylish city cousins, though, the truth is there's no place like home.

Eva Dutko, 27, from Slateford
I bumped into Eva while shopping for my dinner in Sainsbury's.
Her laid-back style looked so chic I had to snap her.
She picked up her jeans in Zara, her little grey vest is from River Island and everything is brought together perfectly by a pair of gladiator sandals from Office.
Effortlessly elegant.
