Luke Mitchell lawyer leaves Crown counsel

THE lawyer who successfully prosecuted Luke Mitchell is set to leave Edinburgh's Crown counsel as part of a shake-up.

Alan Turnbull QC, who also prosecuted in the Lockerbie trial and other well-known cases, has decided to return to private practice at the Bar.

The Lord Advocate, Colin Boyd QC, has announced that John Beckett QC is to be appointed principal advocate depute in his place.

He will succeed Mr Turnbull on December 31, when Dorothy Bain, a senior advocate depute, will become assistant principal advocate depute.

Mr Boyd said: "Alan Turnbull has served as Crown counsel for almost ten years. Throughout this period he has shown enormous commitment and professionalism, and has impressed colleagues and observers alike with his outstanding advocacy skills.

"Alan has also prosecuted some of the most difficult and complex cases."
