Lothian women unaware of breast cancer signs

ONE in six women in the Lothians are not aware that a lump in their breast could mean they have cancer, a survey has revealed.

The country's largest breast cancer charity travelled round the UK asking women a set of question about symptoms and published the regional findings.

It has led to calls from Breakthrough Breast Cancer for women to be more "breast aware" in a bid to cut the numbers dying from the disease.

In the Lothians, 132 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2007.

The study also revealed that two-thirds did not know the risk of breast cancer increased with age, while a quarter of those asked under the age of 65 never check themselves.

Audrey Birt, director for Scotland at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: "

Our message is show your breasts some TLC – touch, look, check. Do this regularly as these are the best ways to identify breast cancer early."
