Lothian top for patient survival

PATIENTS who attend for planned operations in the Lothians stand a better chance of survival than in the rest of Scotland.

Figures have shown that, of the 10,306 elective procedures carried out last year, only 18 were followed by the patient's death within 30 days of it taking place.

Nationwide, 155 people died within a month of the 70,000 operations that took place.

The statistics – released by ISD Scotland – showed that the number of annual planned operations had risen by around 1,000.
