Lothian bucks trend as its hepatitis cases dip

LOTHIAN is bucking the upward trend in new cases of hepatitis C being reported across Scotland.

Figures show a record 1735 cases in the country last year, up from 1554 in 2007.

In Lothian, new cases dropped from 216 in 2007 to 198 last year.

Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown said they were "very concerning".

He said: "They show that Hepatitis C is clearly still on the rise in Scotland. Hepatitis C can have a serious impact on individuals health and can lead to major complications and eventually death.

"It is clear that not enough is being done to educate people about the risks of Hepatitis C."

He added: "Given that at present there is no vaccine or cure, Ministers must do much more to raise awareness of this disease and its risks.

"Current campaigns are obviously not working well enough."
