Lothian bucks infection trend

CASES of hepatitis C are at the lowest in four years across Lothian, bucking a national trend.

Latest figures show that in 2008 there were only 200 people in the area diagnosed with the disease.

This works out at around 24.5 in every 100,000 residents, and is considerably lower than the national average, and means there are currently around 3,000 people in the Lothians with the potentially fatal disease.

Health Protection Scotland, which published the statistics, said there was concern nationally at the growing number of infections.
