Lockerbie paper to be given to court

SENIOR judges in the Lockerbie bomber's appeal yesterday ordered a secret document to be handed to a court ahead of a closed-door hearing on the issue.

They ruled that the confidential paperwork should be given to the Appeal Court in Edinburgh within a week.

It was also decided that a private hearing before three judges should take place at a later date, with a view to resolving a dispute over the mystery document.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer, is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years after being convicted in 2001 of the 1988 bombing, in which 270 people died.

He lost an appeal in 2002, but the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission referred his case back to the court last year.
