Loch Lomond: winner of a waterway
MEASURING 27 and a half square miles, Loch Lomond has long been one of Scotland's leading visitor attractions. The largest inland waterway in Great Britain, formed during the Ice Age by glaciers, it contains at least 35 islands.
The loch is dominated by nation's southernmost munro, Ben Lomond, which towers over the beauty spot at 3,195ft, while the West Highland Way skirts the bank. The loch is already a huge draw for boating and watersports, including kayaks, canoes, wind-surfers, jetskis and speedboats.
Well-heeled visitors flock to play on the championship golf course and stay at the five-star Cameron House Hotel, a magnet for pop and rock stars playing concerts in nearby Glasgow. The Maid of the Loch, the last paddle steamer built in Britain, operated on Loch Lomond for almost 30 years, and is undergoing restoration.
