Local news: Survey looks at stores as an attraction

BUSINESSES in the Capital have been asked to take part in an online survey assessing the success of the campaign promoting the city centre as a Christmas shopping destination.

Essential Edinburgh is running the survey to get feedback on the 'Edinburgh Sparkles' campaign, which included billboard advertising in a series of UK cities, as well as on TV and in newspapers.

Responses, at surveymonkey.com, have to be submitted by January 14.

Support for health workers affected by suicide

A SUPPORT scheme has been launched for NHS Lothian employees to cope with the suicide of patients.

Health chiefs said health workers who work closely with psychiatric patients are often the forgotten victims when a patient takes their own life.

As a result, the organisation is looking at ways to offer support to staff.

It is understood the project will involve follow-up meetings about the incident months after the event to ensure the nurse or doctor in question is coping.

Botanics showcases the crafts

An exhibition at the Royal Botanic Garden is celebrating the diversity of Scotland's contemporary craftmakers, by showcasing work in a range of disciplines from ceramics to willow weaving. The exhibition is presented in partnership with Craftscotland and runs until March 20.

Celebrating a park's life

AN event is to be held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a city park.

Bloomiehall Park in Juniper Green will celebrate the birthday in 2011 and discussions are under way about finding a way to mark the occasion.

Local councillor Ricky Henderson said: "I suspect something will happen."

Belly dance party to boost cancer charity

BREAST cancer charity Just Because is to benefit from a fundraising belly dancing party at The Outhouse in Broughton Street Lane on January 15. The event, from 8pm until midnight, will feature a souk stall, costume swap, special performances and a bring-a-dish buffet. Tickets are 5 in advance or 7 on the night. 'Low carbon' move hailed

BUSINESS leaders in the Capital have welcomed a new Scottish Government "low carbon" strategy.

A public consultation is under way, and Ron Hewitt, chief executive of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said: "The potential rewards are well worth the effort."
