Local News: ESPC races to sponsor Meadows run

Property firm ESPC has signed up to support this year's Meadows Marathon.

The event, on March 6, offers runners the choice of a range of distances, run in laps around the park.

The firm will use its George Street showroom, weekly paper and website to help raise the profile of the event, as well as recruiting staff members to take part.

Last year, the run raised more than 50,000 for a range of charities.

Book store to hold Trident tome launch

A BOOK on Trident and International Law will be launched at Word Power bookshop in West Nicolson Street on Tuesday.

The book presents the proceedings of a conference on the subject, held in Edinburgh last February, and argues that Scotland has the right to reject Trident. The launch at 4pm will be followed by a reception in the Scottish Parliament, hosted by Bill Kidd MSP.

Home plan for empty offices

A PAIR of offices are set to be converted into two flats under plans submitted to council chiefs by a developer.

Sandra Ballantyne has applied for planning permission to turn the offices on Newmills Road, Dalkeith, one of which is currently vacant, into one-bedroom homes.

Engineering the future

BUDDING young engineers from the Capital are to take up the task of designing solutions to real engineering problems.

Five Faraday engineering challenge days are taking place this week. The days aim to encourage more young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

RESIDENTS are being urged to nominate unsung heroes in the Capital as part of the Young Scot Awards.

Welcome in New Year with storytelling event

A VARIETY of Chinese New Year stories will be told by storyteller Marion Kenny at an event in the city.

It will take place at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on February 5 at 2.30pm.

Marion, accompanied by the Chinese harp, will take on The Dragon and the Warlord and Kwang-Su and the Jaws of Death, based on versions by Thomas Bloor and Malachy Doyle.

Tickets for the event, which cost 4 and 3 for concessions, are available at the venue.
