Lifting of ban is breath of fresh air for pipe band

A BAN stopping a pipe band playing outdoors has been lifted.

Newtonhill Pipe Band received messages of support from around the world after it was told it could no longer practise on the grounds outside the Aberdeenshire village's primary school.

Aberdeenshire Council imposed the ban following a noise complaint from one resident.

The pipers, who have practised in the playground for more than ten years, argued that it would be too hot to play inside the school in summer. They also said that, since most pipe band activities were carried out outside, it was important to practise in the open air too.

The council has now told the pipers they can practise outside the school again, until 9pm.

Pipe Major Domhnull McLennan thanked the local community for its support – including those who offered to let the band play in their gardens.

He said: "This is fantastic news, and what has been incredible throughout it all is the support we have had. Through our website we had messages … from across Scotland and Ireland, and even Australia.

"This was a huge overreaction from the council."

An Aberdeenshire Council spokesman confirmed a "mutually acceptable agreement" had been reached with the band.
