Life-saving war surgeon shortlisted for award
A NEUROSURGEON who has saved countless lives in Afghanistan is among six Scottish nominees on the shortlist for the Military and Civilian Health Partnership Awards.
Across the UK, 24 teams, individuals and projects have made the shortlist across eight categories, recognising those who care for Britain's armed forces and veterans.
Wing Commander Philip Barlow from RAF Leuchars, a Glasgow consultant neurosurgeon who has saved civilian and military lives in Kosovo and Afghanistan, is among those up for the awards.
Also nominated is a team of 60 at Ayr's Hollybush House, who provide ongoing mental health care to veterans suffering from severe and chronic forms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Throughout the UK and abroad, the men and women of our armed forces benefit from outstanding health care and these awards celebrate the partnerships that make that possible."
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said: "These awards show what amazing people care for our military personnel and veterans."
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at Hopetoun House in South Queensferry on 29 October.
