Wartime independence folly

Alex Salmond brought up the Second World War recently and I felt it appropriate to note that the SNP leaders of the time put Scottish independence above the fight against fascist barbarity. I am sure it’s not a mistake the modern SNP leadership would make, and I fail to see why Donald J MacLeod (Letters, 29 September) should react with such hysteria to a historical fact.

Quite what wartime strikes on Tyneside – which I am sure were condemned at the time by both the Labour and Communist parties – and Margaret Thatcher’s education has to do with the posturing folly of Douglas Young and Dr Robert McIntyre is anyone’s guess.
