You report (5 October) that the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is supporting a new application by Turkey to join the European Union. Imagine that Germany not only denied the Holocaust but also made it a crime to mention it; that Germany did not allow its largest ethnic minority to use its own language and conducted an armed campaign against that minority with the loss of tens of thousands of lives. Would anyone support  German membership of the EU? Yet that would be an exact parallel with the Turkish proposal.
