The minister for education and other learned educationalists claim that the quality of teaching and the pupils’ hard work has resulted in even better SQA results than last year (your report, 7 August).

This mantra is an annual event. So, if we work backwards for 50 years to when  I was a boy, then the teachers must have been useless, and the pupils an idle bunch of numbskulls. I’m not so sure.
