The ‘F’ word
In the past I and others have utilised your columns to advocate a federal solution for the future structure of the UK. I have since been advised by various politicians and commentators that there is no demand for such a structure, mainly because of the dominant position which England would continue to hold.
However, the “F”’ word has surfaced again in the unveiling on Wednesday, by Sir Menzies Campbell, of the Home Rule Commission Report, and by Tavish Scott (Perspective, 18 October). The problem is that it is probably too late in the debate, even though the independence referendum is still two years away.
This is exacerbated by the fact that support for the Liberal Democrats is at an all-time low, and by an apparent lack of interest in such a “middle way” solution at Holyrood and Westminster.
However, a federal structure for the UK may have some traction with the 40 per cent of Scots who appear to oppose both independence and the status quo. It would be a practical and pragmatic way forward.
