Sporting tears

I appreciate Dorothy Hearnden’s kindness (Letters, 11 July) in feeling sorry for me over her perception of my failure to understand the pressure suffered by Andy Murray resulting in the floods of tears following his defeat in the Wimbledon final.

However, today’s over-paid, over-hyped sporting prima donnas could not possibly comprehend what real pressure is unless they had played in our Monday over-70s golf four-balls at 25p a head.

Similarly, it is not just about the money, but also prestige and aspirations, nevertheless we maintain stiff upper lips in the face of defeat.

Tears may be shed, but later, and in private.
