Snake in grass

You describe (14 August) the grass snake as being “not previously known to exist in Scotland”.

Purnell’s Encyclopedia of Animal Life (1969) says: “Although it [the grass snake] is usually stated to be absent from Scotland, there are records of it as far north as the Caledonian Canal.”

Also, in Edmund Sandars’ A Beast Book for the Pocket (1957), a distribution map indicates that the grass snake is (or was) present in south-east Scotland.
