Smarter travel

It is good news Scotland’s rail passengers can look forward to a more reliable and cheaper service (your report, 22 June).

Perhaps the most important aspect of this from an innovation point of view is the declaration that rail operators will need to link to other services, including buses and ferries.

The answer is Smart Ticketing, and it is already an area in which Scotland leads the world. The technology to allow passengers to use their mobile phones as their ticket carriers, simply swiping their phones at barriers, is already being installed in Glasgow’s Subway and there is no reason this technology cannot be scaled up to cover a wider area.
