Skye’s limits

Here in the Isle of Skye we have just been informed that Highland Council, in Inverness, has approved a single 45.9 metre (150ft) wind turbine for installation in the unique and iconic “Fairy Glen”, a site of great scenic amenity, used in the blockbuster film Stardust.

To make matters worse, the proposal was approved despite a record 25 objections from local residents.

The beneficiary is understood to be a absentee Danish national with no interest in the wider community of Skye, let alone Scotland.

Councillar Drew Millar, of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, himself a resident of Portree, dismissed the concerns of local objectors and is on record as saying: “I don’t think it will cause too many problems and am happy to support it and ask the chair [of Highlands planning committee] to grant permission.”

I have an open request to the First Minister and Drew Millar. Please answer one simple question: how many local objections do we need to raise to get our concerns taken into account?
