Sistema lesson

It was indeed a joy to see the Raploch Concert and I agree with Maggie Chetty that we need to foster our children’s appreciation of our own literature and history (Letters, 26 June).

But I fail to see any logical link to a condemnation of Michael Gove’s “retreat to Victorian views about rote learning and the acquisition of basic literacy and numeracy”.

I am no expert but believe the Sistema method of musical teaching bears some similarities to rote learning in groups; and it is a form of elitism to pretend most children in any society will fulfil their potential without “basic literacy and numeracy”.
