Simply intolerable
Alistair McBay of the National Secular Society wants to claim the victim card and plead “seculaphobia”(letters, February).
It is a neat play on words but sadly lacks fact and logic. Anyone who has actually read what Baroness Warsi, Eric Pickles and Lord Carey have said would not see any vitriol in their critique of the more fundamentalist secularists.
Furthermore, they are not seeking to remove secularism from public life or impose their views on everyone else.
Their critique is simply that the more fundamentalist atheists, under the guise of secularism, are seeking to impose their philosophy and views on every aspect of public life.
The attempt to introduce American-style culture wars comes not from the Christian church but rather from the National Secular Society and others, who, despite their tiny numbers, insist that their way is the only way, and that all recognition of Britain’s Christian past and present should be eradicated. All, of course, in the name of fairness and tolerance.
