Shining example
It WAS interesting to read about Rita, the young student who has never been absent from school (your report, 22 June). But it’s also interesting that the piece is a fairly rare example of focusing on a success story rather than its opposite.
In this case, we don’t hear about the problem of school truancy, but an individual who likes school and is motivated to attend regularly. I would like to see this re-focus on the success stories extended to other areas of life – we should hear more about employees who don’t take huge amounts of sick leave, managers who add value to their organisations rather than taking huge pay-offs before moving on to the next failure, honest bank managers, MPs who don’t fiddle their expenses, “celebrities” who pay their taxes, local councils who try to carry out the wishes of tax payers, church members who genuinely love their neighbours rather than judging them…
If more research was done on those who do get it right, perhaps the rest of us would have more wholesome role models to look up to.
