Running joke
Peter Jones makes a really interesting point (Perspective, 3 July).
Any self-respecting community of citizens would by now have taken to the streets to protest against the malign corporat-ocracy, a corrupt financial and banking sector closely allied to an astoundingly incompetent political establishment which runs Britain.
The only answer must be that we are so satisfied with the bread and circuses (Jubilee theatre, European football championship, dumbed-down broadcasting, Wimbledon and soon the Olympics) on offer that we are totally indifferent to the suffering imposed on many fellow citizens by our representatives.
Although not entirely, to put it mildly, enthused by the prospect of independence I find myself wondering if a Yes vote in the referendum is an opportunity for the Scots, native and adopted, to start all over again.
I am even more surprised to find myself disappointed that the SNP is making such a hash of the Yes campaign so far. Does it want independence or not?
